Professional Development Process
Early Literacy Community Partnerships

In the early part of the school year and at the middle of the year, an "assessment team" at each school conducts AIMSweb assessments for all students to diagnose reading (and math) strengths and weaknesses. The students are also assessed using computer-based STAR reading (and math) assessments.  These assessments are repeated in the middle of the year and at the end of the year and comprise cirtical data for teachers and for the principals upon which to base instructional strategies.

Based on the literacy assessment, individualized intervention plans are then developed based on the following criteria:

  • How a child decodes unknown words
  • How a child derives meaning from text
  • How fluently (rate, intonation, & expression) the student reads
  • How to match the curriculum tools to the reader
  • How to provide the time for prescribed tasks

For K-1 students needing Tier II or Tier III interventions, a combination of intervention specialists, classroom teachers and assistant teachers implement the interventions in small-group settings. Progress is monitored by ongoing evaluation of the intervention implementation.
